THE SCIENCE OF CHAKRAS
The idea of chakras is thousands of years old and forms part of ancient Hindu belief. It’s believed that we have over 100 chakras or ‘energy wheels’ in our body, but seven main ones. Think of them like train stations, major and minor stops where energy flows through.
Modern science has revealed that the location of these seven main chakras correlate with key nerve networks and hormonal glands in the human anatomy, so it makes sense that stimulating chakra points would have a real physical affect on our health, wellbeing and mood.
HOW DO THESE MISTS WORK?
Developed under principles of aromatherapy, chakra scents are carefully designed blends of essentials oils that correspond to specific chakras and help aid our flow of energy.
Our olfactory is just as powerful as our senses, including touch and sight. It’s understood that the right alchemy of essential oils can be as relaxing or energising as a massage or googling images of tropical island getaways.
HOW DO YOU PICK THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU?
“While you can work all seven chakras simultaneously, it’s beneficial to focus on one chakra at a time,” says Marc Zollicoffer, Aveda Director of Spa Education.
Usually the intention of the chakra scent is written on the bottle or vial and it is recommended that you read the intention aloud (“Inspiration”, “Clarity”, “Love” etc.) or visualise the feeling you want to capture while you’re misting away or applying the oil to your pressure points.
Miranda Kerr recently revealed to media that her Heart Chakra Essence was tailor made for her after her separation with Orlando Bloom. “It feels like a warm hug,” she says, rolling the oil in circular motions on her wrist. Her Heart Chakra Essence now forms part of the KORA Organics range.
For a brand like Aveda, in-store assistance is provided to help you discover the best chakra mist to suit your needs. Similarly, leading British aromatherapy company, Aromatherapy Associates offers spa treatments all over the world that use specially devised blends to deliver the same chakra-relieving benefits.
We tried one a treatment on for size a few months ago and noticed our noses knew exactly we needed. On the day, we were feeling a bit rundown and coincidentally selected the exact oil for calming and rejuvenation. Ultimately, to pick the scent that’s right for you, trust your nose – it knows what’s good.
