Get The Cover Look: Nicole Trunfio

The new issue of GrittyPretty Magazine Winter 2017 is now live!

Captured on the 20-acre Austin, Texas ranch of our cover star Nicole Trunfio, with a special appearance by her family – musician husband, Gary Clark Jr.  and son, Zion – the brief for the shoot was “understated and relaxed,” says Gritty Pretty editor, Eleanor Pendleton. Adding, “we didn’t want it to feel contrived or posed in any way. We really wanted to capture Nicole and her beautiful family in their natural home life”.

Behind the lens was L.A-based photographer Trevor King, who says: “Nicole was so easy to work with and seeing her at home, in her element, with her husband and son was really special.” The dream team was completed by stylist Jesse Arifien, hair by Lauren Newkirk, and makeup by Erin Lee Smith.

Below we give you exclusive access as these professionals reveal how they created the Winter 2017 beauty cover look on Trunfio, who has recently launched ERTH Jewelry as part of her larger jewellery line, Trunfio Universe. Keep reading for the exact products and beauty notes from the set so you can replicate the lo-fi beauty look at home.

“The shoot was really easy and laid back, indicative of the type of people Nicole and Gary are. Their family is so sweet and loving. Nicole was really fun to collaborate with. We wanted her makeup to read as beautiful but raw, not to overdone or glam per se. We achieved this by keeping her eyeshadow matte, and by not using any shimmer. She already has a super natural glow to her skin so I didn’t want to cover that up.”

FACE OIL: I used this face oil I make for El Cosmico. Leaves the skin dewy, supple and soft.

PRIMER: YSL Touché Eclat Blur Primer applied underneath eyes and t-zone to help fluid foundation set. This one has a subtle shimmer and is really light on skin.

TRANSLUCENT POWDER: I set with Laura Mercier Translucent Powder, which is so light and doesn’t matte the  skin; it still lets the dewiness show.

TINTED MOISTURISER: Chanel Vitalumière Aqua is a light tinted moisturiser that creates a flawless canvas.

CONCEALER: I used my favourite concealer of all time, Clinique Airbrush Concealer, under Nicole’s eyes. It is genius because it is super lights and sticks to the skin without creaming and reflects the light to camouflage dark circles.

EYESHADOW: Surratt Artistique Eyeshadow was used all over Nicole’s eyelids. Surratt’s eyeshadows are dreamy because they feel like a cream even though they’re a powder and there isn’t fall out from the brush – meaning the eyeshadow sticks to the brush and her eyelid without sprinkling eyeshadow dust on her already finished and set skin. I used the Greige shade all over her lid up to her brow line. Then I created dimension in her cream, and around her lash line with Tom Ford’s Smokey Eye Brush and Surratt Truffle Eyeshadow.

EYEBROWS: Nicole has epic eyebrows so we didn’t need to fill them in. I just brushed them up and set them with Maybelline Clear Mascara. (Also try: Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara in Transparent.)

CONTOUR: For a subtle contour, I used Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate on her cheekbones, hairline and places the sun would naturally hit.

LIPS: Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick is the perfect nude-y pink and looks great on everywhere.

HAIR

BY LAUREN NEWKIRK

“To achieve this look, I started on hair that’d been a little slept in.”

ROOT BOOST: On dry hair I applied R+CO Sail at the roots and used a hairdryer to settle it in for some light texture and lift.

MOISTURE: Along the length, I smoothed through my favourite cocktail of Milk and Ever Oil by Reverie.

HAIR TOOL: I added some soft waves with a large barrel curling iron, reapplying Milk and Ever Oil when necessary to tame unwanted strays.

“The heat and humidity [of Texas] can be challenging over the course of a shoot with Nicole’s natural curls, but I prefer to work with the elements rather than against, embracing the wildness it can lend.”
