NYFW BACKSTAGE BEAUTY: REBECCA TAYLOR S/S 15

Posted in Hair, Style on September 13, 2014 by

If you don’t already know the name Rebecca Taylor, you soon will.

Feminine, modern, refined and cool; Taylor is best known for creating designs to complement the eternally-evolving modern woman and help refine her individual sense of style.

After graduating, the New-Zealand born designer left her home country and arrived in New York with just $600 to her name. Fast forward twenty-something years and Taylor has just unveiled her S/S 15 collection at New York’s Meatpacking District during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

The designer sent sublime silhouettes in sheer pastels and prints down the runway. Notable mentions include a duck egg blue trench coat, narrowly pleated skirts, wide pants and embellished sleeves.

“During the late ’70s, my family and I lived in London,” Rebecca Taylor told GRITTYpretty backstage. “My mum would take my sister and I to Portobello Market and she would buy the most marvellous paisley dresses. It was a beautiful time in my family’s history and this is something I used as somewhat of an inspiration for my new collection.” Adding, “But with a modern twist. Think Mick Jagger and his groupies searching for their guru through India”.

Switching gears to strands, Taylor says, “When it came to the hair look, Rolando (Beauchamp, Hair Stylist for TRESemmé) and I were inspired by regular women on the street. The clothes in the collection are really pretty so we didn’t want the hair to make the models look too done up”.

Beauchamp agrees. “When I think of cool girls, I always think of a low side part,” he says. “Originally, Rebecca and I played with the idea of a ponytail but it wasn’t quite right. So, we tucked in the loop – as if the woman had just thrown her hair back herself. It’s soft and beautifully understated.”

GET THE REBECCA TAYLOR S/S 15 HAIR LOOK:

1. Apply a generous amount of TRESemmé Extra Control Styling Mousse all over damp hair and blow dry.

2. Brush with Mason Pearson Brush. If you have long hair, this will help retain the tension.

3. Create texture by spraying TRESemmé Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo and muss it through the hair.

4. Use your hands to comb hair into a low side part.

5. Secure the hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck and loop the end through the elastic, leaving it there.

6. To finish, spritz lightly with TRESemmé Extra Hold Hairspray.
