Moisture, restored.

The unfolding Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation means that we are all dealing with a lot of uncertainty and change to our day-to-day routine. At Gritty Pretty, we want to help you navigate through this time. We’ll be sharing self care advice and tips on how to look after your body and mental health. If there are any topics you want Gritty Pretty to cover, please send us a DM on Instagram.

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably applied more hand sanitiser in the past month than you have in the rest of your lifetime combined. The Coronavirus situation is frightening – and frankly, a lot of factors are out of our hands (pun intended). However, we can practice good hygiene to help slow the spread of COVID-19 – hand sanitiser included.

Not that we’re complaining but there is one downside to being so g’damn hygienic all the time: our hands are dryer than the Sahara Desert.

The antidote to this is simple. Once your hands have adequately dried down after you have applied your hand sanitiser (and not a moment sooner!), slather on a generous helping of one of the following hand creams. These guys are the best in the business:

Clarins Hand & Nail Treatment Cream

The sell: “An invisible glove of beauty that takes care of the entire hand – the palm, the back of the hand and the nails.”
The price: $44 at Clarins.com.au
The verdict: This hand cream is a lightly scented, do-it-all formula that will keep hands feeling silky smooth for hours.

Lano Milk & Honey Hand Cream Intense

The sell: “With triple lanolin, it transforms very dry hands and nails to super soft, deeply and truly hydrated hands and nails.”
The price: $16.95 from Lanolips.com.au
The verdict: Lano – AKA the makers of our favourite ever lip balms – has a very hydrating, very nourishing hand cream in its offering, packed with shea butter and three kinds of skin-softening lanolin. This yellow tube of honey-infused goodness will also sit pretty on your bathroom shelf.

Leif Buddha Wood Sandalwood & Orange Hand Balm

The sell: A formula rich in super nourishing Australian extracts with therapeutic properties and antioxidants.
The price: $24 at Leifproducts.com
The verdict: Have you tried any of local Australian brand Leif’s offering? This hand cream could be the start of a wonderful relationship between you two. We love this formula for its subtle botanical scent and non-greasy formula that dries down in a jiffy.

L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream

The sell: “This super-creamy balm penetrates quickly to protect, nourish and moisturise hands.”
The price: $15 at Loccitane.com.au
The verdict: If your hands are really dry, hoo-boy, this formula will sort you out. Somehow, this cream manages to inject so much moisture without verging into greasy territory. We don’t know how they do it, but god this stuff is good.

Susanne Kauffman Hand Cream

The sell: “Treat hard working hands to this softening and hydrating hand cream containing hard working botanicals and nourishing oils.”
The price: $66 at Mecca.com.au
The verdict: Feeling a bit bougie? We have just the thing. This hand cream by Susanne Kauffman treats hands as it soothes them. Over time, it will improve the skin’s texture and reduce the appearance of pigmentation.

Jurlique Hand Cream

The sell: “Lasting moisture for hands with an invigorating scent.”
The price: $59 at Jurlique.com
The verdict: Jurlique have three hand creams up their sleeve: citrus, rose and lavender. Enriched with potent botanical extracts, not only will they soften hands, but they will also improve the skin’s texture over time.

Soap & Glory Hand Food

The sell: “Hand Food is a silky soft non-greasy hand cream with shea butter, macadamia oil and marshmallow.”
The price: $10 at Mecca.com.au
The verdict: At $10 for 125ml, where’s the lie? With a 4.7 star rating from 330 reviews on Mecca.com.au, we deem this product to be the people’s choice.

CHANEL La Creme Main

The sell: “A light, fresh and rapidly absorbed texture that leaves skin with a non-oily finish.”
The price: $87 at Myer
The verdict: Who knew hand cream could be so chic? Everything about this product screams luxury. Sure – it’s a little pricey but you will feel so French and so put together when you pull it out of your handbag.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Moisturising Hand Treatment

The sell: “Smooth dry skin with this non-greasy, fast-absorbing hand cream that hydrates for up to 8 hours.”
The price: $29 at Mecca
The verdict: The hand cream to match Elizabeth Arden’s iconic Eight Hour Cream. Cracked, dry skin doesn’t stand a chance against this ultra-nourishing luxurious formula.

Keihl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve

The sell: “A handbag (or toolkit!) favourite, this heavy-duty hand salve is a saviour for active and dry hands.”
The price: $27 at Mecca.com.au
The verdict: With very gender-neutral packaging, Keihl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve really is heavy duty. If your hands are super, super dry this truly nourishing formula will bring them back from the brink.

Oribe’s Côte d’Azur Nourishing Hand Crème

The sell: “A luxurious blend of oils and shea butter hydrates and repairs, making it perfect for everyday use or as an overnight treatment”
