At Gritty Pretty, we recognise we could do better. We can be better.
We pledge to be the change we wish to see. We commit to creating an online beauty space where all people – particularly Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) – feel included, considered and empowered.
In the past, we have not done our part to effectively cater to our diverse audience. We have always said we stand on the side of equality and inclusivity, but despite the best of intentions, our practices have not always lived up to that standard. We have preached “diversity” as an overarching goal to strive for, but did not always back it with concrete action. That stops today.
Beauty is our passion and we want Gritty Pretty to be an inclusive space where every person feels both seen and heard. To us, this means not only showcasing diversity, but creating content catering to everyone: a trusted platform that recommends a foundation shade to suit every skin tone; where we research and review hair care products that every textured hair type; and where we make suggestions of face serums and treatments to suit every specific skin concern.
To our loyal readers and new readers (welcome!), know this:
We’re sorry it’s taken us so long, but we will not be vague anymore. We will be transparent with the steps we’re taking to make diversity, inclusivity, and representation our priority.
We know the power of the beauty industry, its influence, and its not-so-pretty reputation. We can do better—we must do better—when it comes to representation, and we promise to lead the way, now and moving forward. We want to be on the right side of history and we want other independent and larger publishers and media outlets as well as beauty brands to follow suit.
- To ensure 50 per cent of persons featured on GrittyPretty.com and all of Gritty Pretty’s social platforms are BIPOC.
- To ensure 50 per cent of Gritty Pretty Magazine cover talent is a person of colour; shining a spotlight on their specific beauty needs.
- To promote more Black- and Indigenous-owned beauty brands across our channels.
- We will never publish a new hairstyle roundup that does not include a wide range of hair types and textures.
- We pledge to thoroughly research Black, Indigenous and Asian hairstyles, makeup looks, and beauty practices, understanding their roots and meaning throughout history, and to avoid incorrect attribution and appropriation. We will actively put in the work to further our personal knowledge of Black experts and beauty topics. If a Black person has a beauty question, our editors should be able to answer it. We know this is our editorial responsibility.
- To continue listening to and speaking with influential BIPOC people within the beauty industry.
- We pledge to make our Instagram grid an inspiration board of inclusive images of beauty. We will do this by ensuring 50% of images posted each week represents diverse beauty.
- We pledge to promote BIPOC content creators fortnightly in our Women To Follow carousel.
- We pledge to prioritise regramming content from Black creators and prominently credit them for every post.
- We pledge to host Instagram takeovers that feature diverse industry professionals and talent so our audience sees all representations of beauty.
- We will continue to actively prioritise hiring diverse contributors and creatives to share their voice on our platform, and not just on topics having to do with their background or race. We commit to adding at least 5 more diverse voices to our contributor network by the end of 2021. Here, you can read some of the excellent work written by our regular contributors, Nateisha Scott and Shilpa Bhim.
- To prioritise internships and work experience placements for BIPOC people; fostering their career development within digital publishing.
- We will actively work on long-term diversity initiatives, such as adding sensitivity reading as a regular step in our publishing process and hosting career development opportunities for writers of all backgrounds.
An independent editorial audit will be carried out bi-annually to ensure we’re kept accountable.
