Dreaming of a sea change? The tale of Zulu & Zephyr fashion designer Karla Rose and her young family will inspire you to take the plunge.
A little over two years ago, Karla Rose, co-founder of fashion labels Zulu & Zephyr and Millk, and her partner Ben Martineau, graphic designer and creator of Sunday Supply Co, decided it was high time for a sea change.
With their first child on the way and burgeoning businesses to manage, the creative duo packed up their busy life in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and headed north to Suffolk Park, a small pocket just outside of Byron Bay in New South Wales. “We were based in Bondi and decided on the change to be closer to family and to be more in synch with who we are as people as we love the ocean,” explains Rose.
With the beach on their doorstep and friends close by, Rose credits the suburb’s village atmosphere as a major drawcard. “The residents fill the streets of a morning and afternoon, making their way to and from the beach and the local store knows you by your first name,” Rose says of the town’s laid back vibe. he slower-paced lifestyle has also afforded Rose and her partner the opportunity to spend more time with their children, Mini, 2, and ten week-old Ru. “The beauty of where we live is that all of our friends have kids and freelance careers so we’re all in the same boat juggling small children, work and beach time,” she continues.
