If there’s one way to sum up Tommy Hilfiger, it’s by envisaging an all-American girl. Or gal.
And, at the Tommy Hilfiger A/W 15 runway show held at the New York Park Avenue Armory last week, the runway was aptly converted into an astro-turf football field to celebrate 30 years since Hilfiger started his eponymous label.
Inspired by an American love story — fusing styles of the late ’60s and early ’70s with a vibrant game day spirit — the collection saw sportswear reimagined with a modern twist.
Athletic stripes added a sporty detail to just about every item, many of which were decorated with little pins and stars reminiscent of 1940s football paraphernalia. Models including Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn were wrapped in lush shearling coats, jackets trimmed with leather piping and football-lace boots.
But, being a beauty website, it would be remiss of us not to mention the makeup.
Backstage, there was no war paint required. Instead, superbowl-style supermodels were kept fresh-faced with clean eyes, strong brows, and a peachy, dusty lip.
“The inspiration is Ali MacGraw in Love Story and all-American beauties — very sporty, beautifully groomed brows and perfected skin,” says makeup director, Pat McGrath, who created the look backstage. “On the eyes we used the CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 4-Kit Eye Shadow in Sheerly Nudes. It gives you easy colours to make a whole eye.”
As for those sweet Gigi-style lips, McGrath used CoverGirl Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm in Sweet Tweet. Originally, McGrath and her team of makeup artists were going to use blush but after the rehearsals, McGrath opted to take the blush off. “It’s very simple makeup,” she said.
Now, we aren’t calling ref but that beauty look is what we call a touch down.
