An icon, under the spotlight.
In 2020, new beauty launches are flying thick and fast. Every day, we are presented with a new, you-beaut product – each promising to change our lives and ensure we never (ever!) get a wrinkle again.
Despite all of the noise in the market, there are a handful of old-faithful products that have stood the test of time. Why? Because they work – and they have a loyal following of fans to prove it.
Today, we’re throwing the spotlight on Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup. (AKA Estée Lauder’s most iconic foundation. In fact, renowned makeup artist Filomena Natoli used Double Wear on Pip Edwards for the Winter 2020 cover of Gritty Pretty Magazine.) Women across the globe love this product. Why do they repeat-buy? And does it really stay in place all day? We investigate.
The name: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup
The sell: According to the brand’s website, Double Wear is a “worry-free, long-wearing makeup stays fresh and looks natural through heat, humidity, nonstop activity.”
The price tag: $59 / 30ml
The loyal legion of fans: Just quietly, Double Wear is the #1 foundation in Australia. That has to count for something.
The ingredients: With Double Wear, what the brand leaves out is just as important as what they put in. The formula is oil-free (good for oily skin types), non-acnegenic (meaning it won’t clog pores) and fragrance-free (perfect for sensitive skin).
The best way to use it: There’s no right or wrong way to apply Double Wear – the ball is in your court. Although, we’ll offer a few suggestions because that’s what we’re here for:
- For everyday, your-skin-but-better coverage, apply a few drops of Double Wear to the back of your hand and mix with Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair before applying to your face. This will sheer the product out and give the usually matte foundation a dewy effect.
- The next step up? After priming skin with your skin care regime (this is vital for a smooth and glowing canvas), apply a few drops of Double Wear to the center of your face, apples of your cheeks and chin. Use your fingers to slowly blend out. Your fingers are warm so they will help ‘melt’ the foundation into your skin.
- Need more coverage? To reap the benefits of Double Wear’s buildable medium coverage, use a brush or sponge to buff the product into skin. Again, starting from the centre of your face and blending out to avoid a ‘cakey’ finish.
The benefits: Okay, so let’s get down to the nitty gritty – if so many women continue to repeat-buy Double Wear, there must be some serious benefits. Estée Lauder claims this product is transfer-resistant and has 24-hour wear. While we’ve never tested this theory out – that would require sleeping in our makeup and no thank you – it has to be one of the longest-wearing, stay-all-day foundations that we’ve tried. If you apply it at 5pm, it will still be on your skin, looking flawless as ever at midnight.
Double Wear is versatile – you can dress it up or dress it down. As we touched on before, you can build on this medium coverage formula to make it a full coverage. Or sheer it out, if that’s your vibe on any given day. It’s the LBD of foundation.
In 2018, Rihanna made headlines when she released Fenty Beauty, calling out to the fact her Pro Filt’r Foundation came in 40 shades, dubbed the ‘Fenty 40’. But just quietly, Estée Lauder has manufactured 62 shades of Double Wear for quite some time. With undertones of cool, neutral and warm, you can confidently walk up to an Estée Lauder knowing there will be a shade to suit you. If you can’t make it to a store and need to get shade matched, Estée Lauder recently launched a new virtual shade matching service via their website.
The verdict: It’s a yes from us. One thousand times yes. There are a multitude of foundations on the market. However, Estée Lauder Double Wear stands out from the rest. Double Wear is a foundation that does what a foundation should: it covers a multitude of sins and won’t budge until you’re ready to wash it off.
