Stop everything – the new Autumn issue of Gritty Pretty Magazine is now LIVE.

Gritty Pretty cover girl Elle Ferguson, founder of new beauty line, ELLE EFFECT, gets candid in an interview by friend and OUAI hair care founder, Jen Atkin for our latest issue.

Behind the lens was celebrity photographer Emily Abay, makeup artist Ania Milczarczyk, hair stylist Brad Mullins and stylist Molly King. The brief: to highlight the modern day businesswoman and social influencer that Ferguson is with traditional power shoulders, high-fashion tailoring, hair goals and high-beam cheek bones.

Go behind-the-scenes below and discover how to recreate Ferguson’s cover look:

Three hair looks were created for the cover shoot to showcase both the gritty and pretty sides of Elle’s persona, starting with her signature soft waves and a messy ponytail and finishing with a knotted, low bun.

PREP: Hair was prepped with  Kerastase Elixir Ultime Nourishing Oil, a decadent hair-smoothing treatment that can be used on both just-washed and dry hair.

HEAT STYLING: Hair was then blowdryed with a large round brush and curled with a medium sized tong.

STYLING: Elle sprayed FUDGE Clean Blonde Violet Tri-Blo to enhance her dimensional blonde colour and conceal brassy undertones.

HOLD: L’Oréal Paris Elnett Hairspray was used for moveable hold throughout the day.

FINISH: Mullins finished with Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray and Bumble and bumble Brilliantine.

“I absolutely love working with Elle. She is super fun, hard working, supportive and kind.” – Brad Mullins, Hair Stylist

To achieve the ‘Beauty Boss’ makeup brief, Ferguson’s features were enhanced and emboldened with clever makeup application.

BASE: On her skin, makeup artist Milczarczyk used a mix of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation for coverage and Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser for a dewy finish.

BRONZER: The darker shade of the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate Palette was brushed over skin to accentuate Ferguson’s ELLE Effect Tan and facial contours.

HIGHLIGHTER: BECCA Shimmer Skin Perfector in Opal.

BROWS: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder was used to fill in any sparseness and then a clear brow gel was used to brush brows up and set them into place.

LIPS: Good ol’ Lanolips.

EYES: “The eyeshadows were all M.A.C Cosmetics and I mixed and matched them into my own palette so I don’t know their names…I don’t even know colours that I could list to lie!” confesses Milczarcyzk. We recommend: M.A.C Cosmetics Mineralize Eye Shadow x 4 in ‘Gold Shine’.

MASCARA: The one and only BENEFIT ‘They’re Real’ Mascara.

“On set, Elle always makes an effort to ask everyone around the room how they are. The energy on set was amazing all day. Doing Elle’s makeup isn’t hard with skin like hers but I absolutely loved playing up her eyes and making them look even more blue.”
Ania Milczarczyk, Makeup Artist
