A fourth-month investigation into a cure – or at least a lasting – for adult acne. Spoiler alert: we think we’ve found it!
This is the story of how I got adult acne under control. It does not cover the aftermath hyper-pigmentation of acne-scarring (I haven’t got that far yet), so if you’ve come for advice on that, sorry. Not today.
Four months ago, my face was a national part of acne; a rich and thriving ecosystem of blackheads, whiteheads, raging pustules and under-the-skin cysts. What a time to be alive. This wasn’t my first time at the rodeo: starting at 19 (I’m 25 now), I’ve had five major full-face flare-ups (with the window between each getting shorter), each time successful managed with a round of prescription topical and oral antibiotics (Clindamycin and Minomycin) and a retinoid cream (Stevia A 0.025%). I also had acne as a teen, but never this bad.
If it sounds dramatic, good. Debilitating, depressing, frustrating and really fucking inconvenient are other words that come to mind. When the crux of your job is telling people what to use to get great skin, it feels then Mike Ross-fraudulent when you don’t have it yourself nor a solution when someone else asks.
What follows is a culmination of my four-month investigation speaking to experts and acne sufferers, sieving through medical journals and road-testing products and treatments to find a cure, or at least a long-term solution, to adult acne. Here’s hoping it changes your skin for the better, too.
